I believe a person who is looking for a mobile laptop or netbook do not care much about performance and also don’t expect much on hardware specification, ASUS U30SD-XA1 may not as light & think as Macbook Air but it comes with an obvious better hardware specification, while ASUS U30SD-XA1′s hardware spec is : 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB of RAM, and  500 GB 5400 rpm HDD (you can even play some games on this laptop !), what Macbook Air offers is 1.7 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM and 128 GB SSD !, SSD may be faster but I don’t think 128 GB is a sufficient storage space, so my final verdict is if you are feeling ok with more weight but better specification and more than a half price of 13 inch Macbook Air, I think ASUS U30SD-XA1 is your choice, but if what you are looking for is top of the line, working swiftly netbook, I think Macbook Air can be your best choice for this Holiday deal.
